Bogolan Fini, or mud painting, is an intricate and labour-intensive art unique to women in the Segou area of Mali. Cotton is first handwoven by the men. It is then laid on the ground where women paint the characteristic abstract designs using a fermented dye from “wolo” bark and leaves of the “n’golama”. After drying in the sun, the cloth is washed and coated three times with mud from the banks of the Niger river, resulting in the intense earthy tones.

Mud Cloth Cushion Cover 38 x 40 cm
Applying patterns to mud cloth is labor intensive and time consuming. First women soak the rough cotton cloth in leaves that have a natural softening agent called tannin. When they apply clay in bands, diamonds, and other geometric shapes, the clay reacts with the tannin and a dark brown design is left on the fabric. The background of the fabric is then bleached white or cream to improve the contrast of the design.
